Macaron Ice Cream ; 마카롱 아이스크림

Macaron Ice Cream ; 마카롱 아이스크림

A fad that started creeping in about a year ago, but started catching on during the hot summer in Korea. The chewy macaron shells goes hand in hand with the melty ice cream itself making it a sticky but cool treat.
Usually sold as ice cream sandwich in between 2 macaron shells, these treat have become my personal favourite as well. Here are some places to try them in Korea !

Antique
Located in the small and unusual alley of the Hongdae street, serves the best Macaron Ice cream I ever had.
Each macaron ice cream is freshly made in the shop and even though they have 8 flavours up on the sign, usually they only have 4-5 flavours each day. From Green tea to Cheesecake to Mango, there is a definite choice for each and everyone. Each treat is priced at 4,500won. Their panna cotta is worth a try too. Do take note that this is not a cafe, take-out only !

I have tried the Cheesecake, Yogurt and Cherry flavour before but nothing comes close to my personal favourite : Strawberry.
Top with dried strawberries, each bite is a mix of sweetness with a tinge of sourness.

Try to eat it fast as the macaron shells tends to harden within 5 minutes, making it from chewy shell to just pure hard shell. *knock knock macarons ~ *

Nearest Station : Exit 8 of Hongik University Station.

A la papa Cafe
Not to be judge by their name, A la papa Cafe is a highly rated cafe with a loyal fanbase.
Known for its cosiness atmosphere and interesting layout, A la papa Cafe definitely stands out as a special cafe in the Edae/Sinchon area !
If/When you manage to go up the rather dangerous/steep staircase, be greeted with the cutest second floor ever ! I personally call it second and a half floor. heehee.
Look at the pictures to know why !

The macarons fridge are displayed outside the shop. After a short debate with my friends about why it was there, (citing excuses like attracting crowds to it etc), after asking the shop staff, they just simply reply, because there was no space in the shop itself. HAHAHHAHA.
The macarons here are priced at 4,000won, and are available in basic flavours Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla and Green Tea.

After trying the Vanilla macaron ice cream, I conclude that, it is nothing special.
Despite that, I will still encourage people to patronise this cafe. Simply because it is so cute !
And psst, they sell main course such as Chicken Teriyaki Fried Rice for 6,500won and homemade lemonade for 5,000won ~

Nearest Station : Exit 1 of Ehwa Woman University Station

Paris Baguette
If you have been to Korea, you surely have seen Paris Baguette, one of the most successful bakery chain in Korea.
Paris Baguette is not one to lose out to trends too. Having pushed out many trends themselves, they have caught on to the macaron ice cream fever too !

Available in Cookie and Blueberry flavour, I decided to try the Cookie one.
For 3,500won and being widely available, it is not a bad choice.
Except that if you can overlook the macaron shell being overly hard ...
Like brick hard kind of hard. Excuse me, while I use it as a door wedge.

Molly's Pops 몰리스팝스

Molly's Pops 몰리스팝스

I am a sucker for cold treats.
From macaron ice cream to popsicles to weird shaved ice.
There is nothing I have never tried yet.

So here I am, at Molly's Pop, satisfying yet another frozen craving of mine.

Small but cosy.
Popsicle at 3,000won a pop.

Wine & Strawberry ; Powdered Soybean
While i did not pretty much enjoy my wine & strawberry because mainly, it does not have a wine taste nor did the frozen berries have much of a berry taste, it taste mostly my vanilla milk ice cream which is just disappointing to me.
My friend on the other hand, had the powdered soybean with bits of mochi inside and she throughly enjoy it.

Guess I just made a bad choice ~

16온스 커피 : 16 OZ.

Having my office located is probably one of the best thing that happens to me.
There are a lot of artisan cafe around Hongdae and 16oz is one of the one that i passes by everyday on the way to work.

A really small (fits 12ppl max) but nice and cosy place.
The whole place smells really nice and buttery. ( They sell waffles too )
I came in for a drink, but I end up ordering ice cream.

Basic and  good choices.
w2,500 for double scoop ! - Strawberry ice cream!
There was bits of strawberry in the ice cream, the ice cream did not disintegrate/melt fast.
Totally worth every 2,500won of it.
The cone ain't the sugar cone I like but pretty much the airy one that macdonald serves, but its still pretty okay.

I am gonna try the waffle next time, DONT STOP ME.

How to go : Hongdae Station, Exit 3. Make a U-turn and to the pedestrian crossing, turn left and you shall see it right in front of you.

길모퉁이 칠리차차. Cornerside Chilli Cha Cha.

Chilly Cha Cha have somehow became more and more famous with their introductions by eatyourkimchi & cuteinkorea.

The first time i tried it, i had instantly became hooked on it.
I absolutely love the place, the food and the owner who blast hip hop music.

The few occasion that i goes on always land around 3-4-ish with hardly any customers.
I read reviews that said that sometimes they are so full, you have to take away.

Brown building with random flower and butterflies.
Small seatings designed to fit no more then 20 people at a time.

Self-service. :)

There is something interesting in Korea that i havent seen in anywhere else yet.
The toilet key.
Only in Korea, i realise that when you wants to use the toilet, you have to borrow the key, which i have indicated in the photo above with an arrow.
It is pretty funny because are not toilets for everyone and anyone who needs it ?
Why restrict the use of toilet with a key ? Hmmmm....

Translated to english. :)
Halal/ Vegetarian Alert ! Although I am not sure, but so far the pumpkin, basil cream, corn corokke and fried tofu skin udon seems to contain not meat. (I cant say the same for the rest as some places includes meat in their potato corokke and such).

Our Spread ~
Udon, the best companion to beat the cold.
Chilly Cha Cha's Udon is so simple yet satisfying.
The mild sweetness of the soup is awaken with every stir as chilli flakes are roused up.
Can be shared between 2 if want to eat more Corokke.

All the fried goodies.
The batter for the fried goodies are really awesome.
The squid tastes pretty meh but the prawns are really good.
Chilli cha cha have its own "sweet sauce" to dip into which gives it the extra oomph.

Wholesome loads of pumpkin.
For the pumpkin lovers, sweet and loaded.

Basil Cream Corokke, giving heart attack the right reason.
I crave for this, day and night.
This corokke which i have nicknamed "OUTTATHEWORLD corokke" is filled with cream, cheese and mixed grains like barley. The taste of basil is well measured, nothing too overbearing and combined together, they give it a nice chewy texture. How can anyone hate this ?

Instagram-ed !

북촌손만두@홍대-Bukchon Son Mandoo@Hongdae

북촌손만두@홍대
Bukchon Son Mandoo@Hongdae

Stumbled upon Bukchon Son Mandoo while actually looking for a chicken eatery that was not yet open.
Bukchon Son Mandoo opened in 1950 and till now, it have expanded into 20 over franchises. The word 손(son) means hand, which also means the mandoo are handmade. (wow or eek, whatever in your opinion.)

Dont expect to be sitting across your friend because this place is fairly cosy in size and all seats are arrange side by side.

Guide to acting like a regular : In front of you are utensils, and sauces etc.
There are sauces that let you mix your own sauce like pepper, vinegar, soy sauce, chilli powder, chilli sauce, chilli in soy sauce and etc. There is also free flow pickled radish (also known as danmuji) that you can help yourself to.

ele's recipe : I usually pour a spoonful worth of vinegar and soysauce and a 1:1 ratio and add in another similar amount of chili pepper.

The food are decently priced and everything is translated to English make it tourist friendly.

So, my friend ordered a "Bukchon Kimchi Noodle" and I ordered plain rice.
The dumplings were to be shared and man, were the portion big.

Here's an artsy shot of close up food.

3500won for 3.
The fried dumpling (twigigim mandoo) are known as their hit seller. Stuffed inside are minced pork and japchae aka glass noodles and vegetables. On the first bite, it taste rather plain, so after dipping into my fan-ta-bu-lous sauce (that you can see at the corner of the pic), i guess i resurrected it enough for me to finish it. Despite it being deep fried, it was not oily and the skin was pretty crispy-ly good. The dumpling is pretty big and it filled me up pretty much.

On a 2-cents worth connoisseur note, this could have taste pretty good with mayonaise...

4500 won for 3

Next up, Shrimp Dumpling. The filling taste pretty much like the fried one with japchae and minced pork. The only difference is that it is steamed with shrimp. The shrimp barely lend any taste to the dumpling though and it pretty much blended in with the meat. There is more gravy/essence in this one though, goes pretty well with the rice.

The kimchi noodles that my friend had, I guess i am just being mean but it taste like just any instant one but with handmade noodles and dumpling thrown in. Nothing much to rave about.

*Overall Verdict*, I would not go here specially for the dumpling but if i am staying near one of this chain, I am hungry and just need a quick bite, this is pretty much okay ~

How to go : From Exit 8 turn right. Walk straight all the way till you see a Cafe Joenill on your left and you are at a roundabout. Turn left and walk straight into another roundabout. This time turn right. You should be able to see a CU/Family mart and directly across it will be a line of shops, Bukchon Son Mandoo is the second one from the corner.
