Macaron Ice Cream ; 마카롱 아이스크림

Macaron Ice Cream ; 마카롱 아이스크림

A fad that started creeping in about a year ago, but started catching on during the hot summer in Korea. The chewy macaron shells goes hand in hand with the melty ice cream itself making it a sticky but cool treat.
Usually sold as ice cream sandwich in between 2 macaron shells, these treat have become my personal favourite as well. Here are some places to try them in Korea !

Antique
Located in the small and unusual alley of the Hongdae street, serves the best Macaron Ice cream I ever had.
Each macaron ice cream is freshly made in the shop and even though they have 8 flavours up on the sign, usually they only have 4-5 flavours each day. From Green tea to Cheesecake to Mango, there is a definite choice for each and everyone. Each treat is priced at 4,500won. Their panna cotta is worth a try too. Do take note that this is not a cafe, take-out only !

I have tried the Cheesecake, Yogurt and Cherry flavour before but nothing comes close to my personal favourite : Strawberry.
Top with dried strawberries, each bite is a mix of sweetness with a tinge of sourness.

Try to eat it fast as the macaron shells tends to harden within 5 minutes, making it from chewy shell to just pure hard shell. *knock knock macarons ~ *

Nearest Station : Exit 8 of Hongik University Station.

A la papa Cafe
Not to be judge by their name, A la papa Cafe is a highly rated cafe with a loyal fanbase.
Known for its cosiness atmosphere and interesting layout, A la papa Cafe definitely stands out as a special cafe in the Edae/Sinchon area !
If/When you manage to go up the rather dangerous/steep staircase, be greeted with the cutest second floor ever ! I personally call it second and a half floor. heehee.
Look at the pictures to know why !

The macarons fridge are displayed outside the shop. After a short debate with my friends about why it was there, (citing excuses like attracting crowds to it etc), after asking the shop staff, they just simply reply, because there was no space in the shop itself. HAHAHHAHA.
The macarons here are priced at 4,000won, and are available in basic flavours Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla and Green Tea.

After trying the Vanilla macaron ice cream, I conclude that, it is nothing special.
Despite that, I will still encourage people to patronise this cafe. Simply because it is so cute !
And psst, they sell main course such as Chicken Teriyaki Fried Rice for 6,500won and homemade lemonade for 5,000won ~

Paris Baguette
If you have been to Korea, you surely have seen Paris Baguette, one of the most successful bakery chain in Korea.
Paris Baguette is not one to lose out to trends too. Having pushed out many trends themselves, they have caught on to the macaron ice cream fever too !

Available in Cookie and Blueberry flavour, I decided to try the Cookie one.
For 3,500won and being widely available, it is not a bad choice.
Except that if you can overlook the macaron shell being overly hard ...
Like brick hard kind of hard. Excuse me, while I use it as a door wedge.

Everything but the Hero.

Everything but the Hero cafe.

A hidden cafe frequent only by locals.
But recently got a lot in the news.
This cafe is owned by Jo In Sung's brother.
Plus, Jo In Sung have been spotted at the cafe, once with Gong Hyo Jin and crew and once being taken by Cha Tae Hyun.

Used to be a fan of Jo In Sung (before his popularity boom thanks to "that's okay, it's love"), I decided to pop by the cafe when I was in the vicinity.

Jo In Sung's brother (pretty charismatic as well, i should say) is frequently at the cafe, so for those who are a major fan, these is probably the closest you can get to him.
The drinks a little on the pricer end but under 10,000won.
Understandable , as the cafe is situated in the area of the rich.
The cafe, as I was told only have 1 level. If you sit near the window, you can even see Namsan Tower.

Latte Macchiato
Coffee is not bad.
Comes with a complementary cube of chocolate.
Not much food choices, mostly drinks.

Address : 서울특별시 용산구 이태원동 210-68 1층
Seoul, Yongsan-Gu, Itaewon-Dong 210-68

Nearest Train Station : Noksapyeong Station
Takes a lot of trekking up and down.
I will advise travellers to take a cab up and then walk down instead.

[Updated !] Etude House Every Month Cleansing Foam

Every 2 months or so, I look forward to finishing my skincare, hair, body products etc so that I can go exploring for new one.

In March, I got into Etude's new line of products. The "Etude House Every Month Cleansing Foam".

cr: my fat pocket.
Of course, 12 months is just a advertising gimmick on its part.
It is just a line of "Facial Cleanser in 12 different flavours".
Which is super a lot of choices for just one series of facial foam.

Screenshoted from the etude website.
Basically, the 12 flavours/cleansing foam of the months are

01 - Avocado & Butter – Deep Moisturizing
02 - Pomegranate & Berry – Firming
03 - Apple & Tomato – Tone Clarifying
04 - Lemon & Garlic – Purifying
05 - Green Tea - Fresh & Clean
06 - Tea Tree – Trouble Care
07 - Aloe Vera – Soothing Relief
08 - BlueBerry – Revitalizing
09 - Rice – Richly Moist
10 - Green Vegetable – Clean Moisture
11 - Walnut – Smooth & Nourishing
12 - Red Wine – Soft & Moist

Make a guess, which one i chose ~

12- Red wine !

Instructions ~

It took me awhile to blog about it, also because I want to make sure that the products are really working and after 1 month of using it....

I really like it. My skin type belongs to fairly oily and I perspire easily. But so far, red wine have been keeping it pretty moist and my oily skin have toned down.
Its only W3,500 in Korea and sgd$6 in Singapore. Making it a fairly decent buy.
My bottle of 100ml is finishing (after about 2 months of usage) and I cant wait to try another "flavour" !

[Updated ! ]

After I finish the "Red Wine" one (actually I did not finish it, its a short story of housemates finishing and putting water in and me getting really... flabbergasted. )

I went out to get myself another flavour !
AVOCADO !

NUMBER 1 !
Gone is my fluffy background, hello boxer lookalike bg !

I chose the avocado one purely out of the smell, it smells really expensive.
As compared to the red wine, it came out thicker in cream but still lathers very well.
It works as good as the red wine one in terms of oil control and all.

Chapter Cultural Clash : 도레미찜질방; Doraemi Jimjilbang.

Just touched down in Seoul this morning and upon touching down and all, I made a mistake with my guesthouse and one thing led to another, and I had to find somewhere to rest my head.
SO, I decided to go to a Jimjilbang to catch up on sleep.

All along I heard about Jimjilbang but decides against it due to the fact that I have no love for being in the same room as naked woman. (sounds a lot like a playboy mansion.) And the fact that i have to see some ahjumma's ding dong makes me very ... turned off.

Out of the pure fact that I was tired, I decided to rest my head at Doraemi Jimjilbang which is about a 15mins walk from my lodging.

cr: here
Charges are 7,000 after 9am and 10,000 after 9pm.

When i first entered, I had to put my shoes in a locker (for woman only side) then changed the key for another key, paid the 7,000 entrance fee and took a set of clothing and towels.

Upon entering the woman's side of the changing room, I was greeted with naked women. Yeap. No kidding. Thankfully, there was no ahjumma but there were a lot of ... Unnies that looks like they went out to play a lot (read gangster style). So after asking a few of them what to do, they told me to just change into my new outfit and if I want to shower, which is actually this huge area like this, I must go in, BUTT NAKED.

cr: here
Of course with people rubbing each other's back and people by the side of the "tub" chatting.
Being a rather conservative person still, I did not go in there.
But changing still have to be done in the changing room with a lot of person looking at each other change, which is kind of my limit already.

So with the main purpose of sleeping i proceeded into the common area.

cr: here
With all the beds and all laid out for you. You can purchase drinks, baked egg and shim ramyun etc.
The tv is on and there are like 2 "kilns?" sauna area for people to go get heated up or just stay at the common area where people can lie down and sleep and watch whatever that is on tv.

I loaned a blanket for 2000won and proceed to catch on my sleep.
But unfortunately, people constantly talking and snoring really makes it very hard to do so.
When I did actually fall asleep, I kept shooting up cos of the noise. Sigh...
But at one point I got a major shock.
I woke up to a dude one mattress away from me who was lying down watching tv but i was in his angle. And he looks a lot like Lee Sanghoon and because of the angle, it looked a lot like the guy was staring at me sleep.

same terrifying expression.

Overall, it was hard trying to sleep there. The constant ramyun smell was enticing. The sound was bad. It was noisy and there is no wifi. ><

But if you wanna give it a try with a friend (whom you are comfortable seeing naked), you may look through the photos here. Directions are at the bottom of the page ! :D
